Requirements

- Current coaching/teaching equine certificate and/or the desire and ability to pursue Canadian Therapeutic Riding (CanTRA) certification - Visit CANTRA.ca for instructor certification requirements
- Commitment to working in a team environment
- To ensure client confidentiality
- Several years of horse experience
- Strong interpersonal skills, including a passion for working with children and adults of all abilities
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work in a sometimes chaotic environment
- Ability to communicate our goals and requirements to parents/caregivers, volunteers and community
- Satisfactory Criminal Record check
- Current first aid certificate

Duties and Responsibilities

- Conducts riding classes and evaluates their progress weekly
- Supports the Head Instructor in the school program ensuring the safety of all clients, staff, volunteers and horses
- Assesses, with the Head Instructor, new riders for the Independent and Adult Riding classes
- Provides relief for the Head Instructor as required
- Conducts regular schooling and exercise program for horses in consultation with Head Instructor and Barn Manager in accordance with PRTRA policy
- Works with staff to match horses, riders and volunteers, and provides this information to relevant staff in a timely manner each week
- Works with Barn Manager and Head Instructor to continually monitor performance of horses in the program and assess their ability to perform, mentally and physically
- Maintains current First Aid certification and ensures safety of volunteers, clients and other program staff in the Arena and other areas where horses are present
- Follows PRTRA's Policies, Procedures and Practices
- Actively participates in making the PRTRA environment healthy and safe for all individuals on site

Additional Details

At PRTRA our purpose is to provide therapy in an encouraging, fun, safe environment for our riders weekly. Therapeutic Riding has long been recognized as a very effective therapy for people with disabilities, providing physical, psychological, social and educational benefits to all those who participate. We operate from mid-September to mid-June following the school calendar taking breaks during Spring Break and Christmas.
