Requirements

- Graduate or undergraduate university degree in education, public administration, business administration, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience working within education or management, with progressive responsibilities and portfolios, preferably in the Indigenous education sector.
- Experience developing and implementing education initiatives and services, preferably related to Indigenous education.
- Experience working with or within an Indigenous community.
- Knowledge of best practices in the field of Indigenous education
- Knowledge of the ?a?am?n community, its resources, and its cultural practices Knowledge of ?a?am?n language, ?ay?aju??m, or willingness to learn is an asset.
- Knowledge of the impact of colonial systems on Indigenous communities and commitment to embrace and implement decolonizing practices in the performance of all duties.
- Knowledge of school systems
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with community members, partner agencies, students, parents, co-workers, etc.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent analysis, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain complete confidentiality of all information at all times.
- Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework.
- Must have excellent computer skills for communication, reporting, and presentation purposes.
- Ability to supervise, motivate, and support team members.
- Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal experienced in working with provincial education authorities in area of First Nations students’ learning success.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Provides leadership and support in the development of the Nation’s K-12 education programs and structures, ensuring they meet the needs of Tla’amin Nation and citizens.
- Ensures the Tla’amin Education Agreement (TEA) is effectively implemented, bringing related issues to the director’s attention, and sit on committees pertaining to the TEA.
- Collaborates extensively with SD47’s Indigenous Education team related to educational programming, professional development, and the promotion of ?ay?aju??m (Tla’amin language) and culture in SD47 schools.
- Organizes, participates in, and leads regular meetings to ensure timely and fulsome understanding of issues challenging Tla’amin student success and wellness, and work with the team to determine best steps forward.
- Organizes and oversees the Nation’s after school tutoring program.
- Ensures employees have the tools and training to carry out their duties.
- Works with parents (by request) to improve education outcomes for students.
- Manages the development and implementation of effective communication regarding programs and services – within the community and with internal and external partners.
- Promotes community involvement and engages community in determining program and service needs and evaluating effectiveness and satisfaction.
- Helps lead and co-ordinate annual events at the Nation related to children/youth (celebrations, annual culture days, etc.).
